Any one who wants to use the Tecnai F30 STEM must be trained by Yimei Chen and tested by Robert Josephs (director of the facility) before he/she is authorized to run the microscope independently.
After the training, the user will be assigned a user account with the user name in the format of M-N, where M is the user’s name and N is his/her supervisor’s last name, and with a password at the user’s choice.
New student users are strongly encouraged to attend a TEM course (MGCB 344) taught by Bob Josephs every spring quarter.
All standard safety rules for chemical and electrical laboratories must be observed at all times.
Always keep the EM lab clean.
Access to the microscope can be obtained through reservation. Each user can reserve no more than two sessions in advance. Each session can be up to four hours, depending on the complication of experiments. However, users are allowed to work longer if the time immediately after their sessions is not reserved by others.
The FEI engineer has the priority to reserve time for service purpose. He is allowed to cancel reservations by any user without notifying the user (users can check this from News and the Reservation sheet).
Cancellation of reserved sessions must be made at least four hours in advance or the users will still be charged for the time they reserved.
A reservation which is not taken in half an hour would be cancelled and be available to other users.
Restricted users are allowed to use the microscope from 9 am to 5 pm on Monday through Friday. Standard and higher level users are allowed to use the microscope at any time.
Report any problem encountered when running the microscope in the log book. Notify a facility manager ASAP if the problem is serious (e.g., vacuum crashed, computer corrupted).
The file storage computer in the EM Facility is only for transferring and temporarily storing experimental results. Users are requested to remove their data from the computer ASAP. Data older than two months will be deleted by the facility managers without notifying the owners.
Rates for external users will be 50% higher than the rates listed above.
